100th, Birth of Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa, is a figure of great historical importance and global significance. In 2018, the world celebrated the 100th anniversary of his birth, and to mark the occasion, several countries released commemorative coins featuring Mandela's image.

100th, Birth of Nelson Mandela Series. The South African Reserve Bank(SARB) launched a set of banknotes and a circulation coin commemorating Nelson Mandela(born on 18 July 1918). The banknotes are the first set of commemorative notes the Reserve Bank has released in its 100-year history and were released for Mandela’s 100th birthday on 18th July 2018.

The South African Reserve Bank issued a series of gold, silver, and base metal coins featuring Mandela's portrait, as well as a design that incorporates elements of the South African flag. The coins were released in denominations ranging from 1/4 ounce of gold to a 1 rand base metal coin.

Other countries, including Australia and Canada, also released commemorative coins honouring Mandela's legacy. The Australian coin, a 1 dollar silver piece, features a portrait of Mandela on one side and a depiction of the Sydney Opera House on the other. The Canadian coin, a 25-cent piece, bears a portrait of Mandela on the front and a depiction of the Peace Tower on the back.
