The Big Five coin series by the South African Mint, celebrates Africa’s unique natural heritage by embodying the strength and beauty of the Big Five animals on legal tender coins. The “Big Five” term refers to the five most dangerous animals in Africa: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo.

The Big Five series was first introduced in 2019. The South African Mint celebrates Africa’s unique natural heritage by embodying the strength and beauty of the Big Five in this new series of fine-silver brilliant uncirculated legal tender coins.

The coins are issued every 6 months, and the first instalment in February depicted the African elephant. The lion is the second instalment. The male lion symbolises royalty and strength in some African cultures, while the lioness represents femininity and motherhood.
