2021 Big Five II – Elephant
1 Kilogram Gold Coin – South African Mint
The South African Mint made numismatic history in 1967 with the release of the Krugerrand, the first modern gold bullion coin. Since then, it has evolved into a world leader in precious metals coinage, offering a broad range of sizes, metals, and collectible series. Among the most prestigious of these is the Big Five coin program, which began in 2019.
This 2021 Gold Kilo Elephant Coin is a remarkable milestone—the first 1 kg gold coin ever issued by the South African Mint. It belongs to the Big Five II series, the second iteration of the beloved program that celebrates Africa’s most iconic wildlife.
The Big Five—Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo—are named not just for their size or beauty, but for the challenge they posed to hunters of the past. Today, they are recognized globally as symbols of Africa’s rich natural heritage.
The elephant, known for its intelligence, memory, and majestic stature, inaugurates the second Big Five series with a bold, high-relief design. The obverse presents a lifelike portrait of the elephant, while the reverse features a dual-profile view that connects seamlessly when two coins are placed side by side.
This massive coin, struck from 1 kilogram of .9999 fine gold, is a testament to South African minting excellence and is highly sought after by investors and collectors alike.

Close-up front view of an African elephant, with its ears flared and trunk and tusks dominant. Two curved ornaments reminiscent of ivory tusks, the legend SOUTH AFRICA is separated from the inscription BIG FIVE 2021 by a small Coat of Arms of South Africa. Lettering: SOUTH AFRICA BIG FIVE 2021 |

Reverse |
Bears the ingenious design of two halves of an elephant’s face, side-by-side. The ear, tusk, eyes, and part of the nose of each of these halves are prominent in this design, which gives one complete face when two coins are placed next to each other. When multiple coins are placed next to each other, a herd is formed. Lettering: In a small circle at the centre, the mass of the coin 1KG is surrounded by its face value FIFTY RAND above and the composition Au 999.9 below (Au is abbreviated from Aurum and stands for "gold" in Latin), FIFTY RAND 1KG 999.9 Au 999.0 PB(initials of Paul Botes, at the lowest part of the rim) |
