South African Mint:  The South African Mint is a pioneer in modern bullion coinage. Its legacy began with the launch of the gold Krugerrand in 1967—the world’s first modern bullion coin. Since then, the Mint has expanded its offerings in both design and format, introducing coins in a variety of sizes, metals, and thematic series.

Big Five II – The Return of the Elephant: The Big Five coin series debuted in 2019, beginning with the Elephant, followed by the Lion, Rhinoceros, Leopard, and Buffalo. A new design for each animal was issued every six months, capturing the essence and grandeur of Africa’s most iconic wildlife.  The success of the initial series led to a second edition, Big Five Series II, which launched in 2021—again starting with a newly reimagined Elephant design.  The term “Big Five” originated during the colonial hunting era, used to describe the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, and Buffalo. Today, the phrase symbolizes Africa’s exceptional wildlife and the importance of conservation.

A First in Minting: 1 kg of Silver

This release is especially significant as it marks the first-ever 1 kilogram silver coin issued by the South African Mint. Struck in .999 fine silver, it forms part of Big Five Series II, and is the second overall design in that series—featuring a striking new portrayal of the African Elephant.
