South Africa, the originator of modern bullion coinage with the launch of the gold Krugerrand in 1967, continues to innovate in the world of precious metals. Over time, the South African Mint has expanded its offerings with fractional sizes, different metals, and new wildlife-themed series—including platinum editions.
The Big Five II series, introduced in 2021, honors Africa’s most iconic and revered animals: Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Leopard, and Buffalo. This 2023 1 oz Platinum Elephant Coin is a bullion release that draws from the original 2021 design, marking the first design in the second iteration of the Big Five series.
The "Big Five" designation originates from early big-game hunting, identifying the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa. The Elephant, with its massive size, intelligence, and social complexity, symbolizes wisdom and strength in many African cultures.
The obverse of the coin showcases a close-up of the elephant's face with intricate detail, while the reverse features a mirrored half-image of the elephant that forms a complete portrait when placed next to another coin—an innovative artistic element unique to this series.
