The South African Mint, world-renowned for launching the gold Krugerrand in 1967, has since expanded into a broader spectrum of bullion coins, offering collectors and investors a range of sizes, metals, and rich thematic content. This 2022 Gold Kilo Rhino Coin is the third 1-kilogram gold issue in the celebrated Big Five II series—the second generation of this popular wildlife-themed program. Starting in 2019, the Big Five series features a new design every six months, honouring Africa’s most awe-inspiring and dangerous animals: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo.
The rhinoceros, the subject of this edition, is known for its powerful, armor-like body and iconic horn—tragically, also the target of severe poaching. This coin serves not only as a celebration of this magnificent species but as a symbol of conservation awareness.
Crafted from 1 kilogram of .9999 fine gold, the coin features a meticulously engraved close-up rhino portrait on the obverse. The reverse mirrors the animal's image, allowing two coins to form a seamless panorama when placed side by side—a signature artistic touch of the Big Five series.

This ingenious design allows for a complete close-up of a rhino to be seen only when two of the coins are placed next to each other. When multiple coins are placed next to each other, a herd is formed.
