Silver Kilo – 2022 Big Five: Lion
South African Mint: The South African Mint is recognized as a trailblazer in modern bullion coinage, having introduced the world’s first modern gold bullion coin—the Krugerrand—in 1967. Since then, the Mint has continually evolved its offerings, expanding across sizes, metals, and thematic designs.
Big Five Series II – The Lion
The celebrated Big Five series was launched in 2019, starting with the Elephant, followed by the Lion, Rhino, Leopard, and Buffalo—each released at six-month intervals. In 2021, the series began its second iteration, Big Five Series II, once again starting with a redesigned Elephant and continuing the sequence with a new Lion design in 2022. The series honors Africa’s legendary wildlife, known as the “Big Five”—a term originally coined by big game hunters to identify the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, and Buffalo. Today, the term serves as a powerful symbol of African wildlife and conservation.
A Majestic Milestone: 1 Kilogram of Silver
This release marks the second 1 kg silver coin ever issued by the South African Mint. Struck in .999 fine silver, it showcases the Lion—a creature revered across African cultures as a symbol of strength, leadership, and nobility. With commanding detail and lifelike artistry, this coin captures the Lion’s power and poise, embodying the spirit of the wild.

Close-up image of a male lion's head. Below, surrounded by two curved ornaments reminiscent of ivory tusks, the legend SOUTH AFRICA is separated from the inscription BIG FIVE 2022 by a small Coat of Arms of South Africa. Lettering: SOUTH AFRICA BIG FIVE 2022 |

Bears an inspired design of two halves of a lion’s face, side-by-side. This is done so that when two of the coins are placed next to each other, a complete image of the face of a lion is seen (as seen in the double-capsule proof set). When multiple coins are placed next to each other, a pride of lions can be seen. Lettering: FIVE RAND 1kg Ag999 PB (initial of die-sinker) |
