Big Five II: Honouring Africa’s Iconic Wildlife
This coin marks the first design in the Big Five Series II by the South African Mint—a collection that celebrates Africa’s rich natural heritage by capturing the strength and beauty of the continent’s most iconic animals on legal tender coins.
The term “Big Five” was originally coined by big game hunters to describe the five most dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, and Buffalo. Over time, these species have come to symbolize the continent's unique wildlife and conservation efforts.
The Big Five series launched in 2019, beginning with the Elephant, followed by new designs every six months. The second edition of the series began in 2021, once again starting with the Elephant.
This coin is especially notable as it represents the first-ever 5 oz gold coin issued within the Big Five range.

Close-up image of a male lion's head. Below, surrounded by two curved ornaments reminiscent of ivory tusks, the legend SOUTH AFRICA is separated from the inscription BIG FIVE 2022 by a small Coat of Arms of South Africa. Lettering: SOUTH AFRICA BIG FIVE 2022 |

Reverse |
Two halves of the Lion's face Bears an inspired design of two halves of a lion’s face, side-by-side. This is done so that when two of the coins are placed next to each other, a complete image of the face of a lion is seen (as seen in the double-capsule proof set). When multiple coins are placed next to each other, a pride of lions can be seen. Lettering: In a small circle at centre, the mass of the coin 1 kgis surrounded by its face value FIVE RAND above and the composition Ag 999 below (Ag is abbreviated from Argentum, which means "silver" in Latin and is used internationally on silver bullion coinage).
