The South African Mint, a trailblazer in modern bullion coinage since the launch of the legendary Krugerrand in 1967, continues to expand its numismatic legacy through the Big Five Series. This collection honors Africa’s most iconic and formidable wildlife—creatures deeply embedded in African culture and conservation history.
The Lion, issued in 2022, is the second design in the Big Five Series II, and the second release in the 5 oz gold format. Known as the “King of the Jungle,” the lion represents strength, dominance, and nobility—qualities that are intricately captured in this high-relief, legal tender coin.
Each coin features a striking close-up portrait of a lion’s face, designed to convey the animal’s intense gaze and commanding presence. The reverse side, when placed alongside another of the same coin, forms a complete image of two lions—a distinctive hallmark of the Big Five design approach.
This magnificent five-ounce coin is struck in .9999 fine gold, making it not only a visual masterpiece but a substantial precious metal investment as well.
