2023 Big Five II – Buffalo
5 oz Gold Coin – South African Mint
The 2023 Buffalo 5 oz Gold Coin marks the final release in the acclaimed Big Five II Series from the South African Mint. It honors the African Buffalo—a symbol of raw power, solidarity, and resilience in the wild.
This legal tender coin is struck from five troy ounces of .9999 pure gold and features an intricately detailed portrait of the buffalo, known for its unpredictable temperament and strong herd instincts. The coin’s reverse cleverly uses a mirrored image—two coins placed side by side form a full double-buffalo design, one of the series’ unique signature elements.
As the last member of the "Big Five"—which includes the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhino, and Buffalo—the buffalo represents the ultimate culmination of this wildlife-themed series. It was first released in 2021 and re-issued in 2023 with a new obverse design for Series II.
