Silver Five Ounces – 2023 Big Five: Leopard

South African Mint

South Africa pioneered modern bullion coinage with the introduction of the gold Krugerrand on 3 July 1967—a coin designed to promote South African gold globally. As the world’s first modern bullion coin, the Krugerrand became a global standard and continues to be issued to this day.Building on this legacy, the South African Mint gradually expanded its offerings, first with fractional Krugerrands, then through new designs and alternative metals, including the five-ounce silver format. Each of these coins contains exactly five troy ounces of pure silver, referred to as 5.000 oz Absolute Silver Weight (ASW).

Big Five Series II – The Leopard

This coin is part of the Big Five Series II, an esteemed collection that celebrates Africa’s natural heritage by featuring the continent’s most iconic wildlife on legal tender. The Big Five—the Elephant, Lion, Rhinoceros, Leopard, and Buffalo—are each showcased in powerful detail. The Leopard, the fourth animal in the series, originally appeared in 2020. This 2023 issue represents its re-release as part of Series II, featuring an updated obverse design that continues the tradition of combining artistry and conservation.

About the Leopard:  The leopard is the most elusive and secretive of Africa’s big cats. Known for its strength, agility, and adaptability, it is capable of dragging heavy prey up into trees to shield it from scavengers like hyenas. Unlike many other big cats, leopards are excellent swimmers and will even hunt fish when necessary.  These solitary predators are typically golden in color, adorned with distinctive dark rosettes—named for their rose-like pattern. Leopards live and hunt alone, and only come together briefly to mate. The female alone is responsible for raising the cubs.

The Origin of the “Big Five”

The term “Big Five” was coined during the colonial era by big game hunters, referring to the five most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt on foot in Africa: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, and Buffalo. Today, the term endures as a symbol of Africa’s rich wildlife and the ongoing need for conservation.
