The South African Mint, famed for introducing the world’s first modern bullion coin—the Krugerrand—has continually evolved its product line, expanding into new metals, sizes, and thematically rich series. Among its most acclaimed efforts is the Big Five collection, a tribute to Africa’s most iconic wildlife.
This 2023 Gold Kilo Leopard Coin is the fourth release in the kilogram format from the Big Five II series—the second iteration of this prestigious wildlife coin program. The series began in 2019 with the Elephant, with a new design launched every six months. The Leopard follows the Elephant, Lion, and Rhino, each animal chosen not only for its majesty, but for its historical status as one of the five most dangerous animals encountered by early big game hunters.
The leopard, renowned for its solitary, stealthy, and powerful nature, is among Africa’s most elusive big cats. Adorned with rosette-patterned spots and equipped with powerful limbs, it often drags its prey high into trees to avoid scavengers. Its independence and quiet strength are captured beautifully in this high-relief engraving.
Struck from 1 kilogram of .9999 fine gold, the coin’s obverse features an intense, close-up leopard portrait, while the reverse reflects a mirrored half-face design—forming a full image when two coins are aligned side by side. This artistic technique has become a hallmark of the Big Five series and is especially impactful at this grand scale.
