South Africa revolutionized modern bullion coinage with the introduction of the Krugerrand on 3 July 1967. Created to promote South African gold internationally, the Krugerrand was the world's first modern bullion coin and remains in production to this day.
Over time, the South African Mint expanded its offerings by issuing fractional Krugerrands and exploring other metals and designs. Among these are the 1 oz Silver Krugerrand, the Protea series, the Natura series, and several limited-issue coins not tied to a specific series. Early silver coins were struck in Sterling silver (92.5%), but the mint later shifted to fine silver (99.9%). Despite the change in purity, the total silver content remains consistent at 1 troy ounce of pure silver, also referred to as 1.000 oz Absolute Silver Weight (ASW).
The Big Five III Series : This coin marks the first release in the Big Five Series III from the South African Mint, a program celebrating Africa's unparalleled wildlife. The “Big Five” refers to five iconic African animals once considered the most challenging and dangerous to hunt on foot: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, and Buffalo.
The series debuted in 2019 with the Elephant and introduced a new animal design every six months. The second edition began in 2021, again starting with the Elephant. Now in its third cycle, the Big Five III series begins anew with an updated obverse design, setting it apart from the previous two editions.
