South Africa made numismatic history with the launch of the Krugerrand on 3 July 1967, the world’s first modern bullion coin. Issued to promote South African gold internationally, the Krugerrand remains one of the most widely recognized gold coins and continues to be minted today.
Over time, the South African Mint diversified its offerings. First came fractional Krugerrands, followed by entirely new designs in the 1 oz gold format. These include the Protea series, the Natura series, and various standalone commemorative issues. While Krugerrands maintain their original 22-carat gold (91.67%) composition, coins introduced after 1994—particularly commemoratives—are typically struck in 24-carat (99.99%) pure gold. Like the Krugerrand, they each contain one troy ounce of pure gold, known as 1.000 oz Absolute Gold Weight (AGW).
The Big Five Series: Honouring Africa’s Natural Legacy
This coin features the first design in the Big Five Series by the South African Mint—a collection that pays tribute to Africa’s most iconic and revered wildlife. Each legal tender coin in the series showcases the strength, dignity, and beauty of the so-called Big Five: the Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, and Buffalo.
The term “Big Five” originated during the colonial era, when big game hunters regarded these five animals as the most dangerous to hunt on foot. Today, they symbolize African wildlife conservation and heritage.
The series launched in 2019, beginning with the Elephant, with new designs issued every six months. A second edition followed in 2021, again starting with the Elephant. Since 2022, these designs have also been issued as bullion coins, retaining the original obverse artwork.
