2023 Big Five II – Buffalo
South African Mint
The South African Mint, a pioneer of modern bullion coinage, first made history in 1967 with the release of the iconic Krugerrand—the world’s first modern gold bullion coin. Since then, the Mint has continually evolved, introducing new sizes, metals, and series that celebrate South Africa’s heritage and biodiversity.
Among its most celebrated series is the Big Five, which began in 2019 with the Elephant, followed by the Lion, Rhino, Leopard, and finally, the Buffalo. Each animal was chosen based on the legendary "Big Five" list coined by early big game hunters to represent the most dangerous and revered African animals.
The Buffalo, issued in its original form in 2021 and re-released with a refreshed obverse in 2023 as part of Big Five Series II, is the fifth and final creature in the collection. Known for its strength, resilience, and unpredictable temperament, the African buffalo symbolizes the raw, untamed power of the continent's natural world.
These social herd animals are often seen in groups of several hundred. Their fierce loyalty and group defense instincts make them formidable against predators—even entire prides of lions. Among hunters, the wounded buffalo is feared above all for its aggression and cunning, a reputation that has inspired legends across generations.
The coin's high-relief design masterfully captures the buffalo's commanding presence and intense gaze, and when placed next to another coin of its kind, the reverse image completes a full portrait—an artistic signature of the Big Five series.
