The 2022 Rhino 5 oz Gold Coin is the third release in the South African Mint’s prestigious Big Five Series II, which pays tribute to Africa’s most iconic and formidable wildlife. The series celebrates the “Big Five” animals—Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Rhinoceros, and Buffalo—once regarded as the most dangerous to hunt, and now among the most protected and admired creatures on the continent.
This edition honors the Rhinoceros, a powerful and endangered species symbolizing endurance and raw strength. With its rugged hide and signature horn, the rhino is presented in a breathtaking close-up design on the reverse. When placed side by side with another coin, the reverse design forms a full portrait of two rhinos facing each other—an artistic signature of the Big Five series.
