In 2017, the South African Mint introduced the theme of ‘Celebrating South Africa’. Fittingly, the same year marks the centenary of the birth, on 27 October 1917, of Oliver Reginald Tambo.
The South African Mint will continue to immortalise the country’s iconic figures; it has chosen to depict the events in the history of South Africa that demolished the notion of apartheid and championed unity.
The elements of the Order of the Companions of OR Tambo feature prominently on the new R5 circulation coin, resoundingly acknowledging OR Tambo’s contribution to the struggle for equality and inclusiveness.
The reverse of the coin features a neck badge and walking stick. The obverse depicts the national coat of arms, the year of issue ‘2017’, and ‘South Africa’ written in both English and Xitsonga.

Features four elements; the neck badge, a miniature medallion to be worn as a brooch, a lapel rosette and a wooden ceremonial staff incorporating an entwined majola or mole snake. These symbols represent support and commitment, particularly the majola, which signifies friendship, protection and active support in African mythology. Also depicted is the universal yin and yang symbol, which conveys a meeting point for diverse spiritual energies, a notion Tambo was tremendously passionate about. Lettering: R5 O.R.
