SOUTH AFRICA COINS: THE R2(1/4 oz) GOLD COIN
R2 gold coins Series were first re-introduced in 1997 as collectable coins (proof quality commemorative coins). The first R2 gold coins(22 karat) were minted in 1961 when South Africa became a Republic to replace the gold pound coins(introduced in 1952). These were minted until 1983 as 22crt with the Springbok motive on the reverse.
