A 1 oz American gold eagle coin is a gold bullion coin and was first issued by the West Point Mint in New York in 1986. These coins have a ‘W’ mark underneath the date and are produced in four sizes: 1 ounce, ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, and 1/10 ounce. These 4 coins sizes are identical, except for the markings indicating the size and face value of the coin.
Gold Eagles are minted with 22-karat gold coins, with a fineness of 0.9167 (91.67%). The coins are copper (5.33%) and silver (3%).
Note: All Gold Eagles minted between 1986 to 1991, had Roman numerals, and from 1992 to the present changed to Arabic numerals. American Eagle bullion coins do not have a Mint Mark. Only the Collector's Proof and Collector's Un-Circulated(UNC) Versions have a mint mark on the reverse side.
