Wolfgang Lauer(from Nurenberg) prepared the dies and no accurate figures on mintage are known.
Reportedly struck at the Berlin Mint. All were struck in bronze although a piece in aluminium has been reported.

The obverse features a plain shield with three bugle horns with a circle in the centre, which contains a tree of liberty (orange tree) surrounded by three sheep and a lion. An ox-wagon in the foreground. To the left of the shield is a palm branch and to the right a laurel branch. The two branches are tied together in a ribbon. Lettering: ORANJE VRYSTAAT (Orange Free State) Below the shield is the motto "GEDULD en MOED" (patience and courage). 1888 |
