An interesting fact about these pieces is that they were rendered to solicit business and described as salesman examples.

Wolfgang Lauer(from Nurenberg) prepared the dies and no accurate figures on mintage are known.

Reportedly struck at the Berlin Mint. All were struck in bronze although a piece in aluminium has been reported.

Obverse

The obverse features a plain shield with three bugle horns with a circle in the centre, which contains a tree of liberty (orange tree) surrounded by three sheep and a lion. An ox-wagon in the foreground. To the left of the shield is a palm branch and to the right a laurel branch. The two branches are tied together in a ribbon.

Lettering:

 ORANJE VRYSTAAT (Orange Free State)

Below the shield is the motto "GEDULD en MOED" (patience and courage).
