The Krugerrand coins were released in 1967 and since September 1980, it was also been produced in three smaller sizes; a half ounce(1/2 oz) of gold, a quarter ounce(1/4 oz) of gold and one-tenth(1/10 oz) of an ounce of gold.

In 2017, the Rand Refinery began minting silver bullion, which has the same overall design as the gold coin; these are in two ounces(2 oz) of silver and one ounce(1 oz) of silver.

2017 was the first time that a platinum ounce Krugerrand was issued, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Krugerrand coin range.

The purity of the platinum coin version is 99.99%(not 99.95%) as that of most other platinum bullion, and has a face value of 10 Rand(R10).
