In commemoration of the 50-year anniversary of the South African Mint.
The first mint premises in Pretoria was founded by President Johannes Paulus Kruger, in 1890. The Mint Act of 1919 served to establish a branch of the Royal Mint in the city of Pretoria(South Africa). The mint start manufacturing gold pounds in 1923. The mint becomes known as the South African Mins(SA mint) after July of 1941.

Within four of the compartments the designs of past coinage, including the sailing ship (1/2P, 1P design), two sparrows (1/2c, 1c design), protea (3P, 2 1/2c design) and the flowers of the 50c design (arum lily, strelitzia and agapanthus.
