The right to education has been recognised as a human right in a number of countries and world-renowned international conventions and organisations such as UNESCO. In South Africa, we are proud that our constitutional democracy endorses this right and embraces the responsibility we have as a nation, to provide basic education to any individual of any age. Designed by Neo Mahlangu, the R2 Right to Education circulation coin represents the commitment to providing access to education in this country. The coin design illustrates education at different levels, from pre-school right up to the individual pursuing qualifications in their mature years.
This is one of five different commemorative Two Rand coins issued in 2019 with reverse designs based on some of the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, namely Children’s Rights, Right to Education, Environmental Rights, Freedom of Movement and Residence, and Freedom of Religion, Belief and Opinion.

RepresentsRight to Education is showcased by three universal symbols of learning and knowledge namely a book, a cube (featuring letters and numbers), and a graduation cap on this circulating commemorative R2 coin.
The designer Neo Mahlangu believes the topic of education is an important one in the country due to its potent influence on the nation. She wanted to create a design that could resonate with a mature adult pursuing studies as well as the child in a preschool in equal measure.
