The freedom to move around as one pleases within our country and abroad is perhaps one of the most significant rights South Africans have access to. The dark history of the apartheid era, which restricted the movement of black people and enforced segregation of residential dwellings, has been replaced by the right to freely travel, live and work where one chooses. Citing this as his most significant and challenging work as an artist, Rasty Knayles endeavoured to illustrate how free we are to explore our beautiful country. The emblems on this coin all portray the freedom 25 years of constitutional democracy has given us access to.
This is one of five different commemorative Two Rand coins issued in 2019 with reverse designs based on some of the fundamental human rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, namely Children’s Rights, Right to Education, Environmental Rights, Freedom of Movement and Residence, and Freedom of Religion, Belief and Opinion.

Represents Freedom of Movement and Residence, and features a plane, a bird holding a key, and a minibus taxi.
Local graffiti artist Rasty Knayles who designed this coin likened freedom to a bird, a complete embodiment of being free to move around and reside anywhere in the country. The weaver bird is a reflection of an average South African, hard-working, cheerful and respectful to fellow beings. The key symbolises a passport, a prized document which guarantees any person holding it, free and through access across borders and return home and above all serve as an infallible South African identify. The minibus taxi used by millions of South Africans and the passenger plane highlight economic activity as well as movement.
