A more holistic approach to conservation has developed to ensure the continued existence of South Africa’s natural environment, its fauna and flora while controlling the sustainable use of the country’s resources to the benefit of its people. The Peace Parks of southern Africa, which featured in the sterling silver coin series from 2007 to 2012, are a prime example of modern conservation. A new conservation theme, South Africa’s Marine Protected Areas, begins in 2013.
The South African Government has established a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The MPA network was created to conserve South Africa’s offshore biodiversity and to ensure the sustainable use of its offshore marine resources.
