The first Britannia bullion was first minted in 1987. In this classic design, she stands firm against a powerful gale which whips around her shield, Corinthian helmet and olive branch.
The designer and Sculptor, Philip Nathan, envisaged Britannia as a classic and evolving icon. The Britannia features The Royal Mint’s new guilloché obverse design.
This is the only silver coin to carry these new security features(Micro-text, Latent feature, Surface animation, Tincture lines), but also in one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce fine gold editions.
There are four advanced security features built into the design:
- in the lower left, a latent image changes from a padlock to Britannia’s famous trident when viewed from a different angle
- "surface animation" brings the background of sparkling waves to life as the coin is moved
- micro text gives both decoration and protection - the words DECUS ET TUTAMEN (from Latin: "an ornament and a safeguard") are repeated multiple times in the inner rim between the central circle with the design and the outer rim with the inscriptions
- Britannia’s shield bears the Union Flag accented with tincture lines - thin lines (also known as "heraldic colours") representing the colours of the flag.
"Portrayed in a vibrant new design for 2022, Britannia - the noble female warrior who appeared on Roman coins almost 2,000 years ago - continues to inspire a nation. Since first appearing on coins during Roman times, Britannia has endured as a symbol of strength, hope and progress. Chronicling pivotal moments in the story of a nation, leading engravers of each age have reinterpreted the icon on both coins and medals. In 2022, our young product designer Dan Thorne has created a bold and vibrant icon that celebrates past achievements, whilst looking to the future. His design echoes George William De Saulles’ Britannia, which appeared on the reverse of the florin from 1902 and shows Britannia turning slightly over her shoulder, whilst confidently facing forward. Using innovative digital design methods, Dan has brought a modern and exciting feel to this flagship coin range, appealing to experienced investors and collectors alike." as stated by the mint
