Description

Before 2006, the United States Mint did not mint 24-karat .9999 pure gold coins. The United States Mint issued the American Gold Buffalo in 2006.

The American Gold Buffalo coins' design focus is in keeping with the American Eagle Series of silver and gold coins. Both of those latter specimens use iconic American coin designs from the nation's history, and the American Gold Buffalo follows suit with the use of the obverse and reverse designs from the Buffalo Nickel. Issued in 1913 and halted in 1938, the Buffalo Nickel coin was designed by Minnesota native James Earle Fraser. His life experiences growing up on the plains of the Midwest and Upper Midwest are reflected in the design of the Buffalo Nickel. A Native American profile is featured on the obverse with an American bison, a crucial species to the life of indigenous Plains Tribes depicted on the reverse.

At his current moment all United State bullion coins, like the American Buffalo gold coins, are struck at the West Point Mint in New York. Only the proof version of the buffalo gold coin bears the mint mark "W" on the obverse (front) of the coin, behind the neck of the Indian; the bullion version does not have the "W" mint mark.

During 2006 and 2007 a one-ounce version was released. In 2008 the range was extended with a $5(1/10 oz), $10(1/4 oz), and $25(1/2 oz) face value.

Features the profile of a Native American, facing to the right. There is also an F for Fraser on this side of the coin. Fraser reportedly used three Native American leaders as the inspiration for the design of his figure on the obverse. Though some tribal leaders of the early 20th century claimed to be the sole inspiration, it is believed that Fraser combined facial features from various individuals to create this image.
