Named after First President Paul Kruger, a four-term president of the old South African Republic. The first 1 oz(31.931g) Krugerrand was minted in 1967 and made it easier to privately own gold. It was minted in a copper-gold alloy that made it much more durable than pure gold.

In 1980, South Africa also introduced smaller bullion coins containing 1⁄2 oz(16.966g),  1⁄4 oz(8.483g), and 1⁄10 troy ounce(3.393g) of gold.  The range was gradually expanded and includes also a massive fifty-ounce (50 oz) gold coin, five ounces (5 oz) gold, two ounces (2 oz) gold, twentieth-ounce (1⁄20 oz) gold, and fiftieth-ounce (1⁄50 oz) gold, a platinum ounce(1 oz),  plus two ounces(2 oz)  silver and one-ounce(1 oz) silver.
