Threepence, Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, 1894, Gold

The 3P in gold is in all respects identical to the silver 3P, except for the metal content.

The most well-known variety is the “Sammy Marks Tickey”, or 1898 3P Gold. For reasons unbeknown the businessman Sammy Marks was given permission to strike a total of at least 215 gold 3P’s with the 1898 date (there were no normal-issue 3P’s minted that year).

There are also two known 3P specimens in gold struck using 1894 dies. The origin or purpose of these is unknown but their authenticity has been verified. One resides in the South African Mint Museum and the other is in a private collection.
