Beware of forgeries: 1894, 1897, 1898, 1898/99, 1900 and Veldponde.

During the Second Anglo-Boer War, the dies that were to be used for the 1899 Pond were intercepted by the British on their way from Germany. It was decided to overstamp "99" on the obverse below the bust to identify it as 1899 coins.   A unique example of a "Single 9" is one of the great rarities of the series. This was the first overstamp that was done, but it was decided that the "9" is too large and the smaller "99" was opted for.

Since 1898 dies never arrived in Pretoria, it was decided to overstamp 130 new 1898 coins. The figures were counter-stamped below Kruger's bust with '99'
