The Burgers Ponde was the first Gold coin minted in South Africa. Two coins were minted in 1874, the Fine Beard(FB) and the Coarse Beard(CB). There is a variety for the Coarse Beard, referred to as the double 8.

The Burgers Ponde are one of South Africa's most intriguing and valuable types. It is the first gold coin struck for South Africa (although struck in England). President Burgers personally commissioned the project but his proposal to have the Ponde officially adopted as circulation coinage was rejected by the "Volksraad" (Parliament) of the ZAR. As such only a limited number was minted and largely held as keepsakes by the population.

Two types of obverse exist, namely the Course Beard and Fine Beard varieties.
