The 2018 Natura Gold Coins from the Palaeontology – Rise of the Dinosaurs series marks a new chapter in South African numismatics, celebrating the evolutionary ancestors of dinosaurs that once roamed the region. Designed in collaboration with palaeontologists and artists, each coin features a distinct archosauriform species — representing key evolutionary stages in the rise of dinosaurs.

Struck in 24‑carat gold (.9999 fine) with a brilliant proof finish, the 2018 coins are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz weights. The obverse of each coin depicts the fossilised skull, neck, and shoulder of Erythrosuchus africanus, accompanied by the words “Rise of the dinosaurs”, “Archosauria” and the Roman numeral date MMXVIII. The reverse showcases a different archosauriform species on each weight, making the 2018 issue one of the most scientifically rich and visually dynamic releases in the Natura series.
