Gold Krugerrand Bullion and Proof Coins

Gold Bullion Coins - Krugerrand

Krugerrands are gold coins produced by the South African Mint. They were first minted in 1967 and were designed as a way for South Africa to sell gold to other countries. The coin is named after Paul Kruger, who was the President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900.

Krugerrands are made of gold which is 22 karats, or 91.67% pure. They are also alloyed with copper, which gives them a more orange-yellow colour than pure gold. The coin's weight is measured in troy ounces and the most common sizes are 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce.

Krugerrands became popular as an investment in the 1970s because they were one of the first gold coins that were widely available to the general public. They were also a cheaper alternative to other gold coins such as the British Sovereign or the American Gold Eagle.

Today, Krugerrands are still popular as a way to invest in gold. They are widely recognized and are easy to buy and sell. However, they are not without controversy. The South African government's apartheid policies, which were in place when Krugerrands were first minted, led to an international boycott of South African goods, including Krugerrands. Some investors continue to boycott Krugerrands as a way to protest South Africa's past policies.

Proof State coins are produced by the South African Mint(SA Mint) to improve the gold market and soon this coin becomes a popular investment opportunity worldwide.

The obverse features the bust of President Paul Kruger(looking left) and the obverse depicts the national symbol of South Africa, the Springbok(antelope).
