Part of a 4-coin series produced by the Portuguese State Mint, commemorating the 500-year anniversary of Bartolomeu Dias' discovery of a sea passage to the Indies around the Cape of Good Hope in 1488.

Coin 2 in the series, commemorates Nuno Tristão's discovery of the River Gambia in 1446.
